Just so we're clear, I do NOT want to change my current plan -- 1500 Everything Messaging. My 2-year contract is almost up, so I will soon be eligible for the 2-year contract discount.
So after reading what it seems like 50 bajillion posts and articles, I found out that it is pointlessly difficult to get a phone with WiFi without being charged for a data plan and an extra fee. So my new questions are:
1. Are there any phones with WiFi right now on Sprint.com that I could get with my 2-year contract discount and use along with my current plan?
I found one phone on Sprint.com, Express from Sprint, and it doesn't have a link to the "required plans," so I'm assuming I can use it with my current plan. Although it says it doesn't have WiFi, one of the reviews says that it does indeed have WiFi. Can anyone else verify this? It would seem kind of silly to have the Android network without WiFi, but if so I guess users just use it with a data plan.
2. Are there any phones with WiFi on Ebay or Craigslist that I can buy, activate, and use along with my current plan? Or will Sprint notice that I have a smartphone and charge me automatically?
A bottom-line answer would be nice, but really any information to any of my questions would be greatly appreciated!
Hello Monica, which model of phone do you have currently? For clarification, are you asking about connecting your phone to a WiFi access point so your phone can use the data from that connection, or are you asking about using your phone as a hotspot to provide a connection to another device? Thank you, Chris.
No not using my phone as a hotspot, just for connecting it to a WiFi hotspot just like any laptop can do. Right now my phone is the LG Remarq with no data plan.
Thank you for responding, unfortunately the LG Remarq does not have a WiFi radio built in, so it is not capable for connecting to a WiFi Access Point. Typically the only phones with WiFi capabilities are smartphones, and of those smart phone most of them will require a data plan. there are some older smartphones which can continue to be used without a data plan and can connect to WiFi networks for data access, but plan compatibility may prevent you from activating most smartphones without a data plan.
Since RC1024 didn't mention any by name, older smartphones like the HTC Touch Pro, HTC Touch Pro2 or Palm Treo Pro have built-in WiFi, allowing them to connect to access points, but are not required by Sprint to have data plans. The Touch Pro2 was, as far as I can tell, the last smartphone on Sprint that doesn't require at least an Everything Data 450 plan.
