Two ways that your Samsung Galaxy S8+ can save your family, friends, or coworkers when they don’t have a great option for internet is through hotspot or “sharing” your Wifi networks. Data allotments for hotspot use are pretty standard for most consumer rate plans, so the real question is how much data you’ll actually need. It really depends on what you’re going to be doing.
If it’s just work, and your work doesn’t require any sort of video conferencing, YouTube, or live streaming or broadcasting, you can probably get away with about 0.5 GB’s per day per person.
IF you out and about with a younger crowd who YouTube’s, Netflix’s, Snapchats, and Instagrams, and FB’s, you will need probably around 0.75 to 1GB per person per day. From experience, this is how it worked for me:
5 Days of vacation with 5 users, who didn’t realize how much they could do until later on, went through 10GB’s of data. The heavy data use started on the last two days, which is when they blew through about 5GB’s in about a day and a half. Here’s how to activate:
1) Call in or chat with customer service. They will need to add or activate the Hotspot feature on your account for whichever line you would like to have it. You may subsequently need to update the PRL and/or Profile after they update the Hotspot.
2) In Settings, under Hotspot and Tethering, there are 3 options. Toggle Hotspot on, and then tap on the Hotspot heading to view the options.
3) You can rename your phone’s network, and set a password. You can also assign devices to be “preferred” if you like.
4) This menu also allows you to enable “Wifi sharing”. In the case where you are logged on to a Wifi network and you would like to share files or share that Wifi with other users in your group, you can enable this setting. This is NOT a Hotspot, but is very similar.
So after 5 days of Netflix, Clash Royale, Youtube, Whatsapp and Facebook, I finally burned through all 10 GB’s of data. Not too bad, especially since I didn’t tell anyone there were any limits.
As you can imagine, if the wifi or internet connection where you are located is bad, the ability to share data via a Hotspot features can be invaluable to find directions, upload media, or just manage daily tasks that we are used to doing with our mobile devices.
Enjoy!
