Post Your Samsung Epic 4G Touch Ice Cream Sandwich Update Problems Here

If there is not already one is existence, I would like to compile a list of problems current Epic 4G Touch users who have updated to Ice Cream Sandwich software from the recent (within 1.5 weeks of today, 7/18/12) Sprint software push (not rooted ROMS, nor manual updates please). These problems should only be ones which have to come to light after the update, meaning the feature/app/etc worked prior to updating, but no longer functions correctly after the update. Please adhere to the following:

-Be as specific as possible about the issue being experienced

-List only problems that you can replicate

-General location (Eg. Zip code 08817, Northern NJ, etc.) if you'd like

Example:

Zipcode 08817, Here are my problems so far:

1. MHL to HDMI output is no longer functioning. Both the phone and the television recognize an HDMI connection, but the image(s) and audio on my phone are not mirrored on my television as they are supposed to. There is only a black screen shown on my television.

2. 4G connection doesn't allow for Youtube videos to play anymore. The connection is always dropped before any part of the video starts playing.

3. Application opening and closing isn't as smooth as as they were with Gingerbread.

I'd like to get a comprehensive list of problems people are experiencing due to this revent update because I'd like some accountablility for these problems. I've attempted to contact Sprint, Samsung, and Google with these issues, and not one of them is holding themselves accountable for these issues. We are all customers paying for these services, and something should be done upon immediate notification of these problems to satisfy us as consumers, in addition to giving people who may be unaware of the bad changes that have/can occur by updating. Please keep this thread to PROBLEMS only, as I have described above, in order to make it easier for me to compile the problems into one comprehensive list. Thank you everyone for your input and help.

Hey. I have a 4G Epic Touch... best phone they offer in my opinion. I don’t rely too heavily on sprint to solve issues... either they will have the wrong process in place or a representative with tell you what you want to hear. Changing carriers is a hassle.

Try:

Clearing the cache. People have been reporting that it has solved all their problems. (Power off, pull the battery out for a couple of minutes, put it back in and power up while holding the power button and volume up until you get the android robot icon, then select the clear cache selection on the menu and then reboot)

This worked for me and my battery life was back to normal. I also let my phone fully die and charged it again. Remember that you may have redo your settings, (out of box) buts that’s the only real drawback of this.

Hope it helps...

I just went through the process of rooting my phone the other night.  I am now running straight unmolested ICS.  WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE.  Phone is FAST and effecient.  Battery consumption is much better.  Presently I have used 17% of my 3200mah battery on 6hours and 19 minutes of being off the charger.  Before rooting and such, with the Sprint botched upgrade, I'd have used over 30% by now.

Since the update my wife and i have had these list of problems.

  1. No more full bars we are lucky to get 1 bar of service.
  2. Calls are always dropping left and right as well as txt messages are always getting failed to send.
  3. Cannot keep the text message ringtone from ringing in my ear while on a call. Dont know how to disable it as alot of settings were taken out it looks like.
  4. Phone over heats now with the huge battery drain.
  5. Sprint techs do a diagnostic and tell me the phone is fine.
  6. This update really blows.

I really need to get that darn ringtone to stop ringing in my damn ear while on a call. i dont want to disable my txt message ringtone as I have my phone er well I had my phone customized the way i wanted it. I didnt have this problem before.

Since going to ICS I can no longer voice dial over bluetooth without first picking up the phone and hitting power button to wake up the phone. As a Realtor I rely heavily on the ability to press the button on my bluetooth headset to wakeup the phone to voice dial a number or contact. Since going to ICS I have to now reach in my pocket and get the phone and hit the power button before using voice dial. That defeats the safety aspect of having voice dial. Voice dial on GB had its problems but at least it worked. The phone would wake up in your pocket even though the proximity sensor should have told the phone it was inside, thus it was subject to do just about anything while in your pocket depending on what part of the screen was touched until it went back to sleep. I have tried just about everyting except a factory reset since I have to call my board of Realtors to get another code to reactivate my EKEY so I can open lockboxes to show property. On Monday I am going to the Sprint store to see about going back to GB.

ICS PROBLEMS ARE:

    The usual battery drain problems.

Screen brightness issues. Always seems to flip flop back and forth from dark to bright when i go to different screens like from home screen to web browser or from home screen to settings even though i have the brightness manually set to a specific setting and not on auto.

While in web browser you cant scroll left or right while you are scrolling up or down and the same the other way around. The only way to do it is if you initially start scrollinh diagonally.

While in web browser if you have multiple windows open you cant look at the others unless you scroll all of the way (woops i had to edit this message because my phone screwed up on me haha, my swipe is not working but usually does mostly) to the top of the page which is not very convenient if you are currently viewing a large page and dont want to lose where you are reading/viewing. With Gingerbread you could just hit the settings button at the bottom.

In general the phone is not as fast and smooth overall. Everything is slower like going through the home screens

I couldnt edit and add to my post because the phone woulnt allow me too put the cursor at the bottom of the post, only let me put as far down as a couple lines from the bottom because wherevet i touched the cursor would show up a few lines above it.

Anyways the phone is definately slower and choppier.

The battery gauge is very inaccurate now. It actually goes up sometimes too without charging but the battery life is still way worse then before.

I’m sorry that you’ve had trouble. Were you able to use community.sprint.com completely and easily before the update? I’m yet to find a mobile web browser that works as well as Internet Explorer for this site (have tried a variety of phones over the years.), and in fact When I try I get a message from the site that reads” you are using a device that only enables you to add content. If you access Sprint Community from a computer, you can both add, and edit your content.” As for your screen brightness, were you aware that the web browser mode, and other modes govern backlight intensity separately? While in browser tap menu > brightness and color you will see this option does not affect phone’s main setting in Settings > display > brightness. For switching windows instead of scrolling to the top, try pinching from the sides, this gesture should take you to the area to select a window/tab. Which functions are you seeing the phone not being fast and smooth through? When the battery gauge showed an increase in power had you recently completed a task, or data session? Please let me know, Chris.

He JVMALLARI1, I was able to reproduce this action on a test phone, I will check with the developers to see why this feature was changed, and to see if they plan to change it again in the future.

Everything is working fine after the upgrade, except I can no longer sync Picasa albums. I got to Settings > Accounts & sync > Google > Sync Picasa  -- but nothing happens. It won't sync. Any suggestions?

(cross-posted from a similar thread)

It's been bugging me since yesterday (8/11) to upgrade and I was hoping that this would be a better upgrade experience that for the first set of users. So I upgraded about 1/2 hr ago and it's generally fine but there were annoyances and I still may uncover others...

  1. The "Swipe Screen to Unlock" msg is really unnecessary, why'd they feel that was needed ?!
  2. Google's "Music Play" app was removed from one of my home screens. It was still in the apps area but WTH was it removed ?!
  3. Bluetooth was totally jacked up! My device name was changed and I had to re-pair with like 5 freakin' devices! Yeh, that's an annoyance.
  4. Contacts' pictures are fine as thumbnails but when you select the contact (in Portrait mode) the picture is zoomed in so much that it's basically useless, WTF ?! The picture reverts to a decent thumbnail when in Landscape mode. Idiots.
  5. Press/hold Home button displays more info about recent/current apps but it uses transparent overlay on your home screen so it's difficult to see things. It just looks wrong.
  6. Some apps don't exit as quickly, they kind of hang on the display for an extra second or so, pathetic.

Things that are new or still ok:

  1. the Swype keyboard is alright,
  2. Task Manager is still the same,
  3. the status bar now includes text for battery percentage, eg, "75%"
  4. the notifications screen now has an action-icon to put device in silent mode

This upgrade in no way meets expectations for the improvements Ice Cream Sandwich was to bring. Instead, it brings annoyances that I hope are remedied in subsequent minor releases. I wish there was a setting I could've used to inhibit ICS upgrade notifications because I was entirely content with Gingerbread. As an IT PM it just really angers and frustrates me that so much unfinished/half-thought-out implementations were permitted to be rolled out to the user population.

I knew nothing of the update until 8/7, when it was auto pushed to my phone. Unfortunately, I accepted and have experienced similar issues as other have complained of. Poor battery life (apps running continuously in the background!!!), screen brightness shifting frequently, lag upon "exiting" application (yeah right, it just keeps running!!). I should have learned my lesson after that POS Moment with Google!!!!

After dealing with the few annoyances that came with the upgrade (I didn't really have much problems), I ended up rooting my phone and am now running unmolested Android 4.0.4 ICS (FF18).  Let me tell you all, REAL ICS is amazing!  It runs great, with very good battery life....I'd have to say it's the same a the Gingerbread OS.  I have to thank the guys at Android central!  They really know their stuff!
