Samsung Galaxy S2 Power Button Broken After Recent Update

My power button seems to have short-circuited after a recent update pushed through a couple of days ago. It was working fine immediately after the update, then around early evening the phone started turning on and off by itself, draining the battery and then (i think) short-circuiting my power button. Now the only way I can turn on the phone is unplugging the phone from the charger or taking out and putting the battery back in. Sometimes the screen turns on by itself, but I can't make it turn on voluntarily (except as mentioned before). I took it to the Sprint repair store, but because I have a crack across from screen (which was from months ago and the phone had been working perfectly following the crack), I was informed that they weren't allowed to try to repair it. =( The only options they gave me was an early upgrade where I pay $175 and then the price of whichever phone I buy.

I've factory resetted the phone, as well as left the battery out overnight a couple of times. None of which has helped. I've also tried calling outside repair shops and they indicate that they may or may not be able to fix it, but will certainly charge me to just look at it.

I don't have insurance and I'm past the 1 year warranty provided by Samsung. Samsung offered to try to repair the phone, but they would charge at least $165 because they HAVE to repair my cracked screen. I just want the power button fixed so I can use my phone. I don't care too much for having the screen fixed since it works fine with the crack. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I would love to keep the phone, but if there are no good fixes, I might just early terminate as my contract is up in November. Thanks for any help...

The exact same issue just started for me yesterday.  I went to a local Sprint store which claims to do repairs where I was told it's a "known issue" and they guy gave me complicated instructions to get an update from Samsung.  I'm pretty sure it's the Jellybean update that I already got a month or two ago, but I don't know because the update didn't work on my computer.  I went back to the Sprint store today and asked if they could do the update there and for some reason they can't.  All they did was gave me a new battery (which didn't fix the problem) and asked me to give them a high rating when I get a survey about their store.  Luckily for them, I won't get the survey because my phone doesn't work.  I also don't have insurance and they gave me the "pay us $50 and we'll replace your phone that we broke" option.  So I ended up entering and leaving the store twice with a very broken phone and little hope.  I'd like to get the heck out of Sprint, but I have a solid year left on my contract.

And if I may go off on a tangent, saying it's a "known issue" does not make it okay.  That's like reporting a stolen car to the police and they say "It's okay, grand theft auto is a known issue" and then don't do anything about your stolen car.  Come on, Sprint.

You probably have two separate, common issues. (I had both at different times)

Bad battery. They fail frequently, and sometimes "bulge" when they go bad. My phone's radio would sometimes just turn off, and other times after rebooting the phone battery charge would show WAY lower than before the reboot. Very odd behavior, so I didn't originally associate the symptoms with a bad battery. I bought a couple of cheap replacements on eBay, and they worked okay. (I've since upgraded to "Anker" batteries recommended on another forum. They work great!) Some people have had good luck going to a Sprint store and getting a free replacement. Worth a shot!

Bad power button. It's very common on all the US Galaxy S2 models.

I had a similar problem with my SPH-D710 - it would randomly reboot every few days, and kept getting more frequent. Eventually, I noticed that even brushing the power button would wake the screen, and about 10 seconds later the phone would reboot. I cleaned the button with some 90%+ rubbing alcohol, and it worked better for a few weeks. It started acting up again, so I bought and installed a replacement power button.

If you don't have insurance coverage and are out of warranty, you can replace the bad power button yourself. Several eBay sellers have replacement switches for the Epic Touch for about ten bucks.

Or, if you don't have great soldering skills, you can ship it out to get fixed. Several sellers offer mail-in repair service:

$40: Sprint Epic 4G Touch FIX POWER SWITCH Samsung Galaxy S2 Replace Button SERVICE | eBay

$45: Power Button Repair Samsung Galaxy s Galaxy s II Galaxy Note More | eBay

Hey I have been having the same issue and will be replacing the power button on my S2.  Was it difficult to remove the OEM power button?  It appears that it is just being held on by a very small solder joint.  I assume that it required only a drop or two of solder when installing the new power button?

Any advice you can offer before I get started would be helpful...thanks!

I have a solution that seems to be working for me. I downloaded an app "Gravity Screen."

when you put your phone face down it shuts off screen and when you pick it up the screen comes back on!

NO MORE MESSING WITH POWER BUTTON! I read reviews and everyone seems happy, doesn't drain your battery.

I was having the same problem, power button not turning screen on or off unless I plugged charger up or I had to take battery out, put back in, for it to back on and screen go out immediately. I completely reset phone, no luck but to have to start all over customizing phone again. I also had the battery issue that expanded, replaced it, a month later the power button thing. Also, no help from Sprint but for them to tell me to go buy battery. I have insurance, but $100 deductible. I did that with other phones for employees just to get refurbished phones that were screwed up and they took my money and wouldn't make it right. I was ready to buy new phone with new carrier but really don't have money right now.

Try the FREE Gravity Screen App. Hope it works for you like it is for me!

So my phone is doing that random powering off/back on like the rest of yall. Been down the bloated battery after the software update route, too.

Also, the power button isn't working right either. Just installed that app, "Gravity Screen" and so far I like it. Great workarond so far. I'll letchya know if there's anything weird with that program or not. Stupid Galaxy S2. They only make the phones to last 2 years and then it dies...slowly...painful...
