After 3 epic 4g touches (from sprint store replacements) and 3 epic failures with their gps performance, I finally decided to call Samsung directly and request warranty service. They said they would "repair" my phone. The provided a 2 day air shipping label (UPS) and promised 6 business days from the day I send it that I would have it back.
I mailed it today!
In the mean time, I have activated a used EVO 3D that I picked up on Craigslist. I gotta tell you, just after two days (yesterday and today) of using the EVO 3D I am floored by how much better the GPS works in this phone than it did in the E4GT. Satellite locks within seconds, indoors or out, and maintains signal lock during duration of my trips (albeit short trips to and from work, etc). I used to have a EVO 4G that worked just as well, but still after nearly 2 months of using the E4GT and it's completely useless GPS, I had forgotten what it was like to have something reliable again.
Like I said in a previous post, I don't have much optimism that they are going to be able to fix it. However, my Dad was in town the other day showing me his Galaxy S2 Skyrocket from a competing mobile phone company that shall remain namelss, and I had him put on GPS Test so I could show him how bad the GPS is.... And guess what? His works like a champ. Finds multiple satellites by the time the splash screen goes away and locked within 10 seconds in my living room, where my Galaxy S2 Epic 4G can't even see a SINGLE satellite. He said he has been using the GPS and has no problems at all with it. I wish I had a camera to take a picture of the two side by side. His with green lock and 9 satellites, mine with zero satellites, both starting GPS Test at the same time. We talked for about 5 or 10 minutes and looked down, his still locked multiple satellites, mine showing completely nothing.
Anywho, here's the plan. If the Samsung comes back fixed with GPS working as good as my Dad's, I will switch to back to the Epic 4G Touch (it was a birthday present after all and my wife feels awful that I can't use it). If it comes back as I fear still useless, I will give it to my daughter (her evo screen is pretty much fried so she's willing to switch) and I will keep the EVO 3D for myself. I kinda need the GPS....
I'll update when I get it back
I hate to say it but I don't think they will be able to fix it other than temporarily, they have a serious hardware issiue!. Good luck!
Samsung has a nice little tracking system. Shows they received my unit on Feb 28 (mailed it Feb 27). Expected repair date Mar 6 which is consistent with the 6 business days that they told me.
Current status: "Open - Preliminary Evaluation"
Only note so far is this:
"2/28/2012 2:34 PM-Raul: The unit has been received."
So it's probably sitting in a pile, hopefully they will get to it monday Mar 5 and send it back Mar 6.
I have good news and bad news. Good news: My phone came back from Samsung capable of immediately locking onto 9 of 10 satellites with no cell tower assistance. Bad news: It's failing again. It needs a reboot to get a lock with a clear view of the sky, and the signal is only strong enough to use 4 or 5 satellites.
Status in their tracking system was updated today. Now says "Close - Prepare for Shipping" and shows a Completed date of 3/3. Here is the note:
3/3/2012 1:41 PM-SinWook Park Park: The unit has left the technician. SOLUTION: Replaced PBA
REPLACED PBA ( MAIN CHIPSET OVERHEATING )"
So they did something... I'll see how it goes. I hate to hear that it may get here working but then soon fail again. That's awful because to keep having to active these phones costs 36 bucks doesn't it??
Phone shipped Monday Mar 5 and arrived at my house today Mar 7. I will test it out when I get home tonight!
Good luck. Mine is on its way back to be repaired again.
The phone still randomly consumes large amounts of power while idle. It wouldn't surprise me if it's cooking itself when this happens in a jacket pocket.
Well...the phone is back...the GPS is only marginally better. I mean, it's better than when I sent it in. But still not the kind of super GPS like my dad's Skyrocket. If it stays this way, and doesn't get worse, it should at least be useable.
However, now I am having problems with Wi-fi. It won't connect to the wireless network. Grrrr
I finally got connected to Wi-fi but I had to use the WPS connect button on the cable modem to do it. It wouldn't just let me connect with a password. And worse, data rates are awful. Less than 1 Mbps when I did the comcast speedtest. My laptop gets 50 Mbps with (Wireless N). My daughter's EVO 3D gets 16 MBPS.
Now the data rate is practically stalled, won't load anything.
The GPS continues to work well. Just got back from Florida and no GPS issues at all - was able to get and maintain signal when I needed it.
But...have confirmed that there is something wrong with wi-fi. Unable to login to some access points. Others, barely get wi-fi signal when other devices in same range have no problems. At home, can't even use my own wi-fi network.
At the hotel in Destin, had to use 3G the whole time, wi-fi wouldn't work or was so slow to be unusable.
