I've looked at the thread on Android Central regarding the four methods to fix the GPS. The first two methods require root access, which I don't have. I'm not sure if that is something that I want to do at this point, but I understand that getting root access will then allow me to put ROMs on the phone, such as those created by the XDA members.
I've gone through steps 3 and 4. I've gone to the phone setup and changed the GPS startup to 'cold' and I have opened GPS Status and reset the A-GPS data. I went through step 4 on the first weekend I had the initial Epic, but that didn't do anything to fix the problem. I haven't done step 4 with the new Epic. I've seen discussions about some users who have opened the phone and taken it apart to fix the GPS chip. This is why I am waiting for this update to come out.
Google Maps constantly states that my location is temporarily unavailable and my Run Keeper application is unable to obtain a full strength GPS signal. I haven't actually tested out Run Keeper to see how it works with the partial strength signal.
Can I expect that the GPS is going to be FULLY functional (i.e. no "location temporarily unavailable" messages when this update comes out?
well said...should be embarrassed to promote new website update...but u cant get a update for your phones...sooo sad
The web team is entirely separate from the device team.
Let's take people who know HTML/CSS/JS/XHTML/XML/etc. and have them start programming for C/C#/C++/etc.
Web design and software programming are only related by the fact they both deal with technology otherwise there is absolutely nothing in common between them.
I'm not even going to get started on the fact that the manufacturer codes the updates, not Sprint. Sprint just does final testing primarily to ensure it doesn't break the network or cause havok.
We're spending our hard earned money on this, and obviously Sprint hasn't the slightest inclination to compensate us. I go into a restaurant and order a steak with mushroom sauce, you better believe I'll get mushroom sauce or the restaurant will be begging to compensated in some other way - discounted price, a different sauce, or free dessert - without me having to ask. (Where's me free dessert Sprint?) In fact, I'd be happy with you only offering free dessert to those that seem to care about not having Android 2.2. The rest will be none the wiser. Maybe you could give us a free movie or two on your fancy new movie software. That would at least increase the coolness factor of our phones while we wait.
@Tidbits808: so what part of - going into threads that have lots of people emotionally involved with an issue and disagreeing with them - is not trolling? You even do it after you state that you are not concerned about the issue, another classic symptom of trolling. I understand you have an opinion on lots of subjects that "don't really bother you". What I don't understand is why your "opinion" always seems to be an attempt at shooting down other peoples opinions. If you knew anything about human nature, you would understand by reading these posts that there is a lot of emotion and frustration involved in an issue such as this (and the gps issue) and you should know that telling someone that their frustration is unwarranted and wrong is only going to cause further frustration and stronger emotions. That's exactly what a 'troll' does.
So go ahead (because I know you will or at least strongly want to) and tell me how many ways I'm wrong, again - just like you did all the other people. It's amazing that you can't seem to figure out why so many people get upset with you. Personally, I can live without 2.2 for the time being. I certainly would like to see it fixed; but, I'm not going to tell people how wrong they are in discussing an issue with them when they obviously are more concerned about it than me - that's just stirring the muck (aka trolling).
Also, your arguments (different thread) that people have problems with all phones doesn't make it right. If a company says they have GPS, than that GPS should work. If a company sold me a $40 phone cradle made for my phone that works only if my phone has android 2.2, then my phone should have android 2.2 - at least the implication is that I should expect to have 2.2 soon, not 4 months into a phone that company wants me to replace in 2 years.
Sincerely (as opposed to sarcastically), I hope someday you can begin to understand people better. Your life will improve; trust me, I've been there. A hint - it starts by truly and thoroughly looking at things from more than just your own viewpoint.
They gave you dessert if you ever cared to look. $50 worth of Media Hub rentals:
Call up Sprint customer service and you just saw the promo and wanted to take advantage of it. Give them your email, you'll receive one where you reply with your phone number and then you get your code. You get access to the rentals that you can watch for up to 30 days.
On another note, at this stage of the game, T-mobile was smart. Keep their mouths shut, and when it's available, announce it the day before. No speculation necessary, nothing to dodge, miss, screw up or what not.
The only information I can find on the Sprint site for this (other than forums) is here:
If you can tell from the URL, it's a pop up window. I called Sprint customer service about it. At first, she was not sure what I was talking about. Actually, she wasn't even familiar with "media hub" as she had me repeat the word hub twice. I sent her to the link and she place me on hold (I'd guess to as a supervisor about it). She said the promo was actually from Samsung. She referred me to the number at the end of the above URL. I will call them during lunch and report back here.
I just checked with sprint and their reply was:
I have checked that the promotion is honored on a reactive basis for all Samsung Epic 4G purchases made between 8/31 and10/30/10.
I have checked that you have 60 days redeem the promotion of $50.00 towards Media Hub purchases between 8/31 and 10/30/10.
So since I didn't use Media Hub, it doesn't do me any good.
I talked with Maria at Samsung and she said check with Sprint. As a reminder (Charlene at) Sprint originally referred me to Samsung. Both referenced the "promotional period". I will say that Charlene was much more endearing than Maria...but still no 'code'.
As far as I can tell, the goods are gone. I guess I'll keep hoping for a free dessert but I think they've run out of ice cream.

It's sad that so many people have to be disappointed because two companies can't get their act together. It's even sadder that we are stuck in a two year contract after buying a $300 to $500 piece of crap depending weather you bought it on contract or paid full price. It's also enough to make you so angry that you say the hell with sprint and samsung all together. God I hope the rumors are true and google buys Sprint. Then we can get our updates straight from the source and we won't have to put up with crappy bloatware that bogs down our phones. One thing is for sure, I will never buy another Samsung product ever again. I had a friend who bought his first smartphone this weekend and asked my opinion about the Epic. So, I told him the truth and he made the right decision and got the Evo Shift 4g instead.
