I'm not sure, because I don't keep detailed battery stats or close track on exactly what I do day-to-day that might be different and affect batter power, but I think it might be a bit worse now than before. At my office, I didn't notice any major changes -- my battery life there is usually pretty bad. But at home, where I can be on my own WiFi connection and such, it's usually better. Today though, it doesn't seem to be doing all that much better than at work; some, but not as much as I seem to remember. I do carry around a large spare battery to recharge my phone from if needed, so I'm usually OK. But battery life is *definitely* something I'd like to see improved -- I never used to have to recharge my old Palm Centro in the middle of the day to make it through a work day, but I have to do that semi-regularly with my Epic or risk the battery draining completely. Not good.
Like others that have posted, my battery life has significantly decreased after the EC05 update. When I unplug the phone after it's fully charged it drops to 95% before I unlock it! And continues to drain very rapidly over the next 12 hours. The battery usage shows the screen brightness is the only thing draining the battery which was also the case before the update when the battery lasted so much longer.

The final tally is 2% battery drain for two hours on WIFI . 10% battery drain for 2hrs on 3G. No phone calls. Same 3G signal strength at ending and beginning. Same background running services and applications at start and end. HMMMMM
I'm running wifi...usually in the same room as the router. ATK is killing unused background apps every hour. Autosync is disabled for everything but gmail....and I am losing 9% per hour. The built in utility says the drain is the screen, but it's almost always off - ergo, a dark screen is apparently still drawing current? The phone drains much more quickly....it also charges much more quickly. If I were the release engineer (and I still had my job at this point), I would be lying awake at night thinking about how these are related. Or whether the battery state is being misreported, and it's not draining as fast as indicated...after all, we did lose a martian lander once because someone confused feet and meters. : P
The fact is, the phone used to go 20+ hours with reasonably steady use. With EC05, it goes 10 hours or less (on very light use)....nothing else changed except the OS nudge from 2.1 to 2.2.
Another long, longtime customer and always reasonably happy to put up with Sprint-ims for as long as I had a phone that worked. I sure do love my Epic's functionality but my already borderline-acceptable battery life is now trash. I feel like I'm back in '97- paperweight is the perfect description.
And seriously, Rihanna? Anyone figure out the fix to the embarrassing playing-a-really-loud-song-for-no-apparent-reason problem? Sigh. I thought I wanted Froyo.
Well Blue - my fiance and I are TOTALLY with you. We have exactly the same issue. Fortunately we have not experienced the "mystery" music - or I am sure his Epic would have been flushed down the toilet at this point!
Our battery life is running much the same as yours. And now for the fun stuff - we called Sprint..........
We got routed to a specialist, then another specialist - and were told that we could do a hard reset. I promptly told them that according to this forum and many that have tried that, it doesn't work! So then they wanted to send us to a Sprint store - to do the same thing. Asked about the flash-back to 2.1 and was told NO that can't be done.
When my fiance said he wanted something done or he was going to change carriers to AT&T - we were transferred to an Account manager - who basically didn't seem to care whether we changed carriers or not. She wanted to send us to a Sprint store to exchange the phone - and I told her that wouldn't help since it would still have the program which is the problem.
I still want to hang on to Sprint service...... I, of course, am much more patient. But we kept getting told that this was sent out by the manufacturer - Samsung - not them - so maybe we are screaming on the wrong forum???!!!
The code is between samsung and google....but sprint is responsible for the management, and froyo for epic has been released by Sprint into the wild before it was ready -- twice! one wonders whether it was beta tested (and if it was, was it tested on real world epics like yours or mine). samsung is a hardware manufacturer; it took another outstanding hardware manufacturer - apple - eighteen years to learn the value of putting well-designed software on their equipment. let's hope samsung is quicker! just as os x is applied over a unix codebase, the samsung touchwiz is overlaid on google's android base. featurewise, froyo is ready for epic....but operationally, under the hood, it's not.*
not every sprint store can flash your phone - it has to be a designated service and repair store. the tech at the store i visited offered to flash my phone back to 2.1 - but since i hadn't backed up my phone, i demurred for the time being. lookout free has a backup system, and there is an app called "sms backup and restore," which has been recommended (i downloaded and ran that).
*a sprint rep has also suggested that the OTA installs have been more problematic than the hard-reset (clean) froyo install from the SD card, which I will try this weekend. re-installing apps will be a pain, but flushing my system of apps i don;t really use, and leftover 2.1 files that the OTA install might have left behind, will probably be a good exercise for me. Or so i tell myself. It might even work!
Blue, I would be interested to hear from those that have done a hard-reset to see if it has helped the issues. Somewhere on here I thought I saw where someone had done that and really didn't see any benefit.
If you don't mind, keep me posted through e-mail on your progress this weekend. If it helps, I guess I'll try it too. Where do you get the froyo install for the SD card?

I use Advance Task Killer and its shows about 20 applications that continue to open up and run no matter how many times I kill the task....however the FROYO task manager does not show them. Could there be a conflict between the Advance Task Killer and the FROYO task manager that is causing a problem?
