Proposal for Instinct-only Professional Developer Program

Proposal for Instinct-only Professional Developer Program

Sprint's PDP Details (ref: Sprint August 2008 Webcast withJohn Hale)-$5000/year fee covers:
-signing of 2 applications on 30+ handsets (ref: Sprint targeted device list)
- 25 hours of Virtual Developer Lab time
- technical support
Given:
- Sprint Instinct customers want more applications (ref: this forum)
- Sprint wants more applications for Instinct
- Sprint desires Instinct applications to use SIWL (Samsung Instinct Widget Library)(ref: Instinct application contest)
- SIWL applications do not work on any handset except Instinct
Implications:
- PDP costs unfairly penalize developers usingInstinct SIWL
Proposal:
- create an "Instinct PDP" that covers only SIWL-based applications on Samsung Instinct at a reduced fee
- suggested annual fee $500-1000
Rationale:
- Sprint PDP is not a revenue stream but rather self-funded (ref: Aug 2008 webcast)
- Support for 1 handset rather than 30 should cut Sprint support time significantly
- Sprint testing costs for 1 handset are considerably lower than for 30 handsets
- Instinct-only developers do not need VDL time

I'm not even certain what all this means, but if it involves Instinct owners getting some useful, meaningful apps which we would be more than happy to pay a reasonable one-time fee (not subscription, Sprint!) then I am 1000%

AGREED!

Re: Proposal for Instinct-only Professional Developer Program

In a nutshell, Sprint charges developers $2500 per application for signing to allow apps to use protected APIs such as file system, camera, MMS, GPS, etc (rationale for protected APIs is outside the scope of this discussion).

If you use the SIWL libraries to maintain the Instinct's look and feel, your app will only work wellon the Instinct.

If you use LCDUI, the standard for Java phones, your app will work well on 30+ Sprint phones, and might work on the Instinct.

Same $2500 price for either choice - which do you think developers have been choosing?

My proposal attempts to level the playing field for developers for Sprint's flagshipphone.

My proposal would be that sprint allows the phone's owner to choose whether apps can access the protected APIs or not, or quit charging money for the phone while maintaining ownership of it.

KB's proposal is a fine one. The restricted development to only use SIWL should mean a different pricing structure for Instinct Apps. The phone has enough power to run apps, now make cool ones!!!!

Re: Proposal for Instinct-only Professional Developer Program

But making apps that are restricted to one phone is a huge waste of everyone's time and effort - a point that android will hopefully eventually drive home, but java was first to offer portability if companies didn't go out of their way to subvert it. Apps do need to deal with the lack of hardware keyboards on touch screen phones, but otherwise there is no reason to design anything specifically for one phone. Would you want to buy/run an app that would only run on one model of a laptop computer?

What you say makes sense, which of course is the reason our phones are royally screwed up. Sprint WANTED (and probably still wants) apps made specifically for the Instinct. Probably their master plan was to use this UI on future phones (shuddder).

KB's request is logical and would be great if Sprint took a step in this direction. But they won't. They've already learned the model of success: Advertise and hype the h*ll out of a phone and watch em fly off the shelves. Most unsatisfied people will live with it's shortcomings, and it's easy to ignore the bitching.

a very logical request KB. logic doesn't matter to Sprint though, only making money. our voices will go unheard. best of luck!

I agree 100%! It's a win-win situation, why do they not see this?
