Android 2.2 FroYo on the Moment (Yes, it's possible)

I know a lot of you are upset that Sprint/Samsung didn't release an upgrade to Android 2.2 (FroYo) for the Moment, but that doesn't mean you can't get it. The crazy fans over at SDX Developers have released a build of Android 2.2.2 based on ports from the Transform, Intercept, and Acclaim that works very, very well. Some highlights:

  • Better battery life
  • Battery level reported to 5%, displays in the battery meter
  • Native WiFi/USB tethering
  • Option to protect your lock screen with a PIN or password, not just a pattern
  • Faster GPS locks (sometimes ❤️ seconds)
  • Much faster thanks to just-in-time (JIT) compiling
  • Move apps to the SD card
  • Native voice dialing

You won't get Flash support and there's some odd behaviors with screen brightness (they're working on them), but for someone with a bit of technical skill, it's pretty easy to get up and running. I've been running it since Sunday (after using a number of other custom packages based on Android 2.1) and haven't see any issues. If you've been unhappy with your phone, this kind of refresh may help you at least limp along until you qualify for another upgrade.

And yes, this may very well void your warranty, brick your phone, and kidnap your neighbor's dog. Your mileage may vary, void where prohibited, etc.
