The solution to this is so easy (at least for the Galaxy S8), it makes me wonder about the Sprint developer base. Note that when the Sprint ID installer is running, it fails just at the point when it attempts to make a shortcut to the home screen. The FIX is to go into Settings -> Display -> Home Screen and ENABLE Add apps to Home screen. THAT'S IT! It looks like it can be disabled again later. Also, once this happens, all of those superfluous Sprint apps can be successfully deleted.
