Welcome to our first event of 2011. We will be talking with Melinda Parks, Director of Marketing for Sprint, about how to get the most out of shopping for and managing your wireless service on the Internet! Please stay tuned; we will be starting in about 5 minutes.

[Comment From Tomas: ]

Glad to see the live events starting up again this year!

wengla02:

Thank you, Tomas - glad to see you on the event!

wengla02:

You may submit questions into the moderation queue; Ms. Parks will do her best to answer as many questions in the time allowed. We will begin in 2 minutes.

[Comment From D.Combs: ]

will you be getting the acer iconia smart when production is finish.

wengla02:

Just so you know, we're not going to be able to answer any questions about unreleased devices. Sorry...

wengla02:

Melinda Parks, Sprint's director of marketing, is here to answer your questions about all of the different programs and tools we offer our customers to help them shop for devices and service, as well as manage their bills and wireless usage.

The goal of this chat is to make sure customers are well-informed and knowledgeable about our products and services before making purchase decisions. Some of the questions we know you have are centered around Sprint.com, our pricing plans, device costs, parental controls and usage alerts. So ask away! We'll try to get to as many questions as possible within the next 30 minutes. And, Melinda will also try to answer as many questions as possible after the chat, which we'll post to Sprint Community not long after.

Now, let me introduce Melinda:

Melinda Parks:

Hi everyone. Glad to join you today.

Will there ever be a Nokia phone coming out? or Sony?

Melinda Parks:

We never comment on our specific plans for devices until we announce their availability formally. We have a great lineup of current and already announced devices we can help with.

[Comment From D.Combs: ]

will sprint still push forward with 4g

Melinda Parks:

As you probably know, 4G is available in 71 markets. We remain committed to 4G as a key component to our strategy.

[Comment From John: ]

Hi - would love to know more about parental controls. Specifically would love to see what tools you have for android phones.

Melinda Parks:

We were just talking about this capability today at lunch. This is relatively new and provides some great capabilities. With parental controls you can restrict or limit phone use by minors by blocking texts and numbers, digital media downloads, web access, picture mail and voice calls. You can check out all the details at sprint.com/family.

[Comment From Dave: ]

ATT and Verizon both have family plans with 700 min as an entry level plan. Why doesn't Sprint have something similar and do they plan on implementing one in the future?

Melinda Parks:

We do have a 700 minute family plan, talk only, two lines for $69.99. In addition, in order to keep things as simple as possible for our customers, we've tried to manage the number of rate plans offered. In addition, we know our customers appreciate an unlimited worry free experience as our everything data plans provide.

[Comment From Tomas: ]

Hello, Melinda, there appears to be a feeling amongst Sprint customers that "new customers" get the same, or sometimes even better "deals" than long-term customers. An example is the current 'additional $125 off' offer to new customers starting a 2 year contract that is not available to existing customers. Any comments on Sprint's efforts to retain existing customers with loyalty discounts, etc.?

Melinda Parks:

You're right. That particular promotion is focused on bringing in new customers to Sprint. We haven't cracked the code on how to appropriately reward our long tenured customers. We will include long time customers in Premier Gold (10+ years) and for many customers, we offer incentives to renew their subscriber agreement. We're always looking for ways to address this industry wide issue.

[Comment From Dave: ]

Is there an additional charge for parental controls?

Melinda Parks:

No Dave, there is no additional charge for parental controls.

[Comment From Dave: ]

Does the sprint family locator have any advantages over Google latitude?

Melinda Parks:

I am not as familiar with the capabiities of Google latitude. What I can tell you about family locator is that it gives you, the parent, the ability to determine when and where location is reported.

[Comment From John: ]

thanks - is this in new phones only, or can existing phones use?

Melinda Parks:

John - parental controls can be utilized on any Sprint phone.

[Comment From Dave: ]

I apologize. I was referring to family plans with data.

Melinda Parks:

Dave - you're right, the entry point for minutes on family plans with data is 1500 minutes. Again, with these particular plans we are focused on the simplicity and worry free value of virtually unlimited usage.

Which device is Sprint's flagship phone?

wengla02:

Melinda lost her network connection; sorry about that. The HTC Evo is our flagship phone. We always recommend that you check http://sprint.com/reviews to see how other customers rate and review the phones,.

[Comment From Tomas: ]

Speaking of Sprint Family Locator, is it possible at all to use the service to locate devices on prepaid plans that exclusively use the Sprint network? In other words can I use my Sprint device to locat a reseller's device that exclusively uses the Sprint network?

wengla02:

Tomas - Melinda notes that you can only use Sprint Family Locator with Sprint devices on the Sprint network - Boost or Virgin Mobile devices won't work.

[Comment From Tomas: ]

For users of Sprint's previous "Flagship Device" (Palm Pre), what is Sprint's current replacement/upgrade path now that Sprint has discontinued the Pre with no warning? (We need the ability to plan for the future.)

wengla02:

Tomas, currently we offer Windows 7 Phone, Blackberry OS 6 and Android devices. No comment on Palm / HP devices, sorry. (she won't even tell me one way or the other!)

[Comment From dave: ]

Can you give us a little preview of what Sprint going to show off at CTIA?

wengla02:

Dave - Sprint has quite a bit going on CTIA; stay tuned to the Community site - we'll have a special group set up you can follow and talk about the CTIA news.

wengla02:

Melinda would like to thank you all for your questions! We had more questions than time to answer today. We welcome your comments and discussions on the Sprint Communty. That's a wrap for today's event.

If you're a long time member of Buzz About Wireless or the Sprint Community, you'll remember we used to have live chat events.  They got so popular we had to discontinue them because the traffic threatened to take our site down!  Well, we've got new software and new hardware and a far faster site -- so the live events are back!  Coming up Friday, March 4th we'll have the Commuinty Admin on the site talking about the upgrade, features, bugs, and hot topics in the community.  Come, post questions, see what we have to say at the new space.  We won't be able to answer all your questions, and tomorrows topic will primarily focus on using and getting the most out of the community.

We have more guests planned for 2011 to talk about Sprint programs, plans, wireless and more!
