The new Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport has a pretty cool feature on it for a smart phone – it’s dust and water resistant. This debuted with the original Samsung Galaxy S5 and was included in the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport as well since it was so popular. While I wouldn’t personally shower with it or place it in the pool or toilet on purpose, there are actually a lot of videos posted on YouTube of people already testing this feature out.
This feature has been on some “rugged” phones before that are more bulky or boxy looking but this is really a first for top of the line smart phone and Samsung has it right. There is a small cover for the charging port that you can use your fingernail to open. The phone will pop up a reminder that after charging you need to ensure the door is closed (you can turn this off by checking the box to not see the message again). It has a plastic piece in it as well that stretches to allow you to easily move the door out of the way to charge or plug into a USB port.
The device is dust and water resistant up to 1 meter. It has the highest rating of protection when it comes to dust possible! As for water there is a 8 point scale with the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport being rated a 7 (protected against the effect of immersion between 15cm and 1m). The highest level on the scale is protected against the effect of immersion up to 1m. Again, I’m not purposefully throwing it in the pool but it is good to know if it gets wet it won’t be damaged.
Know anyone that’s clumsy or ever had to replace a phone due to water damage – if so, this is a really cool feature! Anyone actually tried this with their phone?
