Internet of Things and ubiquitous access to high speed internet have allowed us as consumers to extend our reach on how we manage our daily lives. Without taking a dive in to a political discussion about the state of affairs in our post-modern culture, I think it’s fair to say that we, as consumers, feel a need to monitor and care for our property and our things… whether it’s through insurance, home security systems, a dog, or mere human presence, we feel we HAVE to keep an eye on our things, to make sure others don’t take advantage of our perceived absence.
In comes the Sprint Home View Wifi Camera. Although it’s not fully connected to the Sprint Mobile network, it does connect to an available wifi network, and it will provide you with multiple options to monitor your home for activity.
What I’ve found MOST useful is the rules which set up time of day for triggers. Triggers are events that activate the camera and cause it to record 30 second videos. The Sprint Home app allows you to set up times when the camera will just record what it sees without sending notifications, as well as recording and sending notifications of motion detected, and finally, just turning off the service. Because I work from home, there’s no need for me to have a motion detector sending messages to me every time someone or something (read dogs) goes in and out of the view of the front door. But at night, when we’re all asleep, it’s nice to have that option to check in at the front door… to see what the dogs might be barking at… to just SEE, as the night vision mode is EXCELLENT with this camera.
Although it’s not as resilient as some of other devices that are specifically designed with home security in mind, it does provide you with some additional piece of mind, to keep an eye on your home during off hours, or when you aren’t around.
