Unlock iPhone 4S

Hi,

I purchased an iPhone 4S almost 2 years ago.  My contract will be completed on October 6th, 2013.  My account is in good standing.  Can I get my phone unlocked for use on another network?  Thank you.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

Hello Eric,

Thanks for posting. We do offer assistance to unlock the sim card slot but primarily for international use and only to current Sprint customers. We won't be able to provide any specific assistance to move the phone to another carrier. Any permanent change of carrier made to the phone would only be done by a 3rd party and not recommended.

If you are looking to use the phone internationally and plan on continuing your service with Sprint, please feel free to contact our international department for assistance. sprint.com/worldwide

Thank you,

Chris

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply.  I am a bit confused as to why I cannot have my phone completely unlocked for domestic and international GSM useage after I fulfill my contract.  I am a current Sprint customer and in good standing.  I would like to use a US GSM carrier for data when I travel to some places that doesn't have good Sprint data service.  I thought after I completed my contract my phone would be unlocked since I have paid for it.  Thank you.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

Eric,

Thanks so much for the reply! Unfortunately, our variant of the iPhone 4s cannot be unlocked and used on any other carrier within the United States. We have never unlocked iPhone's for domestic use. Question, why were you looking into using another carrier? What has left you dissatisfied with Sprint? We truly appreciate your business!

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

William,

I only want to keep my options open incase I move to an area with poor Sprint data service.  As it is I cannot use data in my builiding at work because I am roaming all the time.  Question, why would Sprint not unlock a phone when the person has fulfilled thier contract?  Other cell phone providers do this so I don't understand what the issue is with Sprint doing it.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

Eric,

I appreciate the speedy reply! Sprint reserves the right to lock our devices to our network, however I can completely understand where you're coming from, especially when you've satisfied your contractual obligation.

You stated that you have issues with data connectivity at work, I'd be glad to check out your area to see if we have some upcoming enhancements which are aimed to improve data performance. Would you mind providing me with your zipcode?

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

William,

Is there a person I can talk to or send a message to to file a compliant about Sprint's policy of not unlocking phones?  I don't understand why they have adopted this policy when other cell cariers will unlock a phone when you complete the contract.  This is going to be a bigger issue soon now that the first of the iphone customers are coming off contract in the next few months.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

So would sprint unlock my iphone 4s after my contract is completed, so that I can use it on other company like T-Mobile.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

No, Sprint will unlock for use with carriers outside US. Even if they did let you use it with US companies, you will be having issues, like dropped calls/ poor reception, slow or no Internet service, etc.

Contact Tim Cook at Apple at tcook@apple.com.  AT&T used to have the same policy as Sprint, refusing to unlock iPhone's (granted AT&T would not remove any locks but the policy was still a problem).  Enough people made noise to Tim Cook that he put pressure on AT&T to change their policy.  I will be off contract as of October 14th myself and I will go through the formality of asking Sprint's domestic technical support to remove the remaining domestic SIM lock on my phone.  Once they decline me, I will then contact Mr. Cook and explain my dilemna along with the fact that I see no point in ever upgrading to another iPhone due to these policies.  I have already asked my company to not consider upgrading any of our iPhone's until we at least get some resolution to this problem.  Otherwise we will have a pile of bricks that are unusable on any other U.S. carrier.  I myself would give my used iPhone to a family member who is currently on T-Mobile.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

Hopefully the H.R.1892 - 113th Congress (2013-2014): Unlocking Technology Act of 2013 | Congress.gov | Library of ... will pass.  It is very frustrating wanting to unlock my phone for domestic use because it increases it's resell value greatly, and being told NO.  I have paid my contract off and yet I have no control over my device...
