Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

Victor,

I've stated twice now that I've been a Sprint customer for over 10+ years, paying over $200/mo on a family plan. I upgraded my iPhone 4s to the 5s. I want to give the 4s to someone else so they can use it.

This is clearly not good customer service at all. It would seem that this is a way of forcing people to stay with Sprint. Regardless, the picture is clear and Sprint will not unlock our phones - after we've paid for them, after we've fulfilled our contract. We're stuck. With that, I will be stuck with 5 phonestotal from my family plan that I will be cancelling this weekend.

Thank you for your post. Sprint is not going to unlock a device for domestic use.

This is what is so annoying and is what is making people so angry at the whole Sprint iPhone experience:

Customer: I paid off my phone.  Please unlock it.

Sprint: We do not unlock phones for domestic usage.

Customer: I own it.  It is paid for.  It is mine.

Sprint: Don't care.  We do not unlock phones for domestic usage.

Customer: Why?

Sprint: Because.  We don't unlock phones for domestic usage.

Customer: What is your reason?

Sprint: No reason.  We don't unlock phones for domestic usage.

Customer: Can anybody help me?

Sprint: No.  We don't unlock phones for domestic usage.

Customer: I can try and get it unlocked from somebody else:

Sprint: Now you are violating the DMCA.  We don't unlock phones for domestic usage.

Is anybody starting to understand why people are getting angry at this process?  The other three other major carriers are unlocking their phones now when certain conditions are met and Sprint is still saying no.  Now that my iPhone 4S is fully paid up and it is legally mine, please explain to me why I should go out and get an iPhone 5S from Sprint when under Sprint's current policies, it never really will be mine.  I already have enough bricks.  I do not need yet another one in the guise of an iPhone 4S if it is deactivated as part of upgrading to an iPhone 5S.  And yes, Sprint will buy it back from me for a measly $160.  That for a 64GB device that is in excellent condition and just got a new battery installed by Apple today under AppleCare+.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

This might help you, taken from Terms & Conditions you agreed with:

Your Device, Number, & E-mail Address

We don't manufacture any Device that we might sell to you or that is associated with our Services, and we aren't responsible for any defects, acts, or omissions of the manufacturer. The only warranties on your Device are the limited warranties given to you by the manufacturer directly or that we pass through. Device performance may vary based on device specifications (for example, a device's software, memory, and storage), and device performance may impact access to all of our Services. Your Device is designed to be activated on our networks and in other coverage areas that we may make available to you. As programmed, it will not accept wireless service from another carrier. Except for any legal right you may have to port/transfer your phone number to another carrier, you have no—and cannot gain any (for example, through publication, use, etc.)—proprietary, ownership, or other rights to any phone number, identification number, e-mail address, or other identifier that we assign to you, your Device, or your account. We'll notify you if we decide to change or reassign them. Your CDMA Sprint PCS phone may have software programming lock that protects certain of the handset's operating parameters against unauthorized reprogramming. If your device has a software programming lock, and you wish to obtain the software program lock code for your CDMA Sprint PCS phone, please visit Sprint.com or call 1-888-211-4727 for information and eligibility requirements.

Actually the correct number is 1-888-226-7212 for Sprint International

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

You should be mad at Congress not Sprint, Congress made it illegal to unlock any phones bought after jan 1st 2013, so if Sprint feels like, they can sue you, and any other carrier that agrees to give you service with that phone. Now days they all share a black list IMEI numbers. Few words, they don't care because the law allows them to do that.

Hopefully Congress will think about people other then companies and pass the law that makes all the carriers to unlock all phones for domestic and international use after the fulfillment of the contract.

Dj_Damjano, thanks for sharing that. It's now even clearer that they DO in fact have an unlock code to give and they CAN give it.... "if they decide to".

So yes, I can be mad at Sprint.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

They can choose to open all SIM codes for the phone, but they choose do all but the US ones, and no one, you, me or anyone else, at this moment, can not make them do that. why? because there is no law that tells them they have to, but there is a law that tells them they can do all they want.

Bottom line is: THEY WILL NOT FULLY UNLOCK ANY PHONES. No matter if you, me or anyone else threatens them, like you, with you taking your 5 lines out or not.

Again, I don't agree with it but I go with it.

I'm caught between a rock and hard place myself.  My iPhone 4S was a Christmas gift from my employer back in 2011.  That gift included the service charges being paid for by my company.  I wound up porting my personal cell phone number to the iPhone from T-Mobile, where it had been for 6 years.  As it is, I would go back to T-Mobile in a heartbeat if I was told my firm was no longer going to pay for my service since any device I buy from them would ultimately be released to me once paid off.  Additional reasons are I would like to get data speeds better than the 250kb/sec or so I get now and I am not pleased with this device unlocking policy.  The best I have been able to do at the moment is have my firm not renew our now expired service contract (we are now month-to-month) nor upgrade any of our devices, which we did discuss recently and it was agreed I would continue to report back if there are any changes.

Still I am waiting to see if the customer representative on the other thread I mentioned has any luck.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

I have never been with a network that is so un-cooperative. It is very frustrating that they will not unlock iPhones no matter what the circumstances.

I was with Sprint but emigrated from the US earlier this month. Before I emigrated I asked that my plan be cancelled. I was told that I could: 1. Keep my iPhone 4s, pay a €150 cancellation fee and that Sprint would unlock it when I emigrate; or 2. Mail my iPhone 4s to Sprint and not incur a cancellation fee.

I called Sprint after emigrating, they made me pay the €150 cancellation fee over the phone and then told me that they would not unlock the phone. I spent almost 2 hours on the phone to customer service but to no avail. Very very frustrating!

If anyone reading this is with Sprint and about to emigrate then know that, in my experience, regardless of what Sprint says, they will not unlock your iPhone.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

if your account was in good standing and you closed it in good standing, they should unlock it, not sure who you spoke with, but you should escalate the issue and try to get a resolution for it.

Re: Unlock iPhone 4S

kylistah,

Thanks for the post. Sorry to hear this is frustrating for you. Your giving the device to someone else to use on another service provider, why not use the device on Sprint? I understand what you want to do, but unfortunately this is something Sprint be able to assist you with. As you stated you know this already. There are ways of unlocking the device but Sprint will not be able to provide you with this Unlock unless you want this to be done for international usage.
