This is a false because I contacted your Sprint World Wide Group only to be told that my phone could not be unlocked. In this USA Today article, http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/tech/story/2012/09/
I don't understand why Sprint is so penny-pinching when it comes to unlocking it's phones. It's not like anyone is buying a plane ticket worth more than the phone itself just to make off with a Sprint phone, for all that people would just buy an unblocked phone. Moreover Sprint customers are still paying the monthly bill even abroad, yet somehow they still want to make more profit off their customers by imposing hefty rooming charges. I choose Sprint because I thought I would have this option of using my phone when travelling abroad as I do so often more than once year. Most other international carriers do not impose such restrictions on their customers so I do not understand why Sprint feels the need to do so. This type of run around Sprint is giving it's customers is uncalled for and in my opinion this is a serious case of false advertising in attempt to compete with Verizon's unlocked iPhone. You either unlock phones or don't, there shouldn't not be a shady grey zone.
First of all, guys stop typing your creepy comments if you have no idea what you talking about, go to cheap chat or so...
Here are the instructions on how to unlock, purchased for full price, in US, under Sprint account, iPhone 5 to use in other countries without Sprint:
1. Call Sprint International support -
1-888-226-7212, option 2, but don't tell them that you want to use iPhone 5 internationally with Sprint (hell no)
Tell them that you paid full price for iPhone 5 and want to unlock it for use outside of US and without Sprint.
They will send a request to Apple to unblock your phone from their services, or unlock it, or whatever they do, they will do it.
2. Connect your phone (after Sprint confirms that request is processed) to ITunes (I hate ITunes too) and back up your data first, then restore your data back to phone, and you are done. You don't have to back up your phone - only if you need your personal data or any other personal reasons.
Can you clarify exactly how the iphone 5 works with the CDMA and LTE? On my Verizon iPad the SIM is for LTE. Is this the case for iPhone 5 on Sprint? Or is LTE functionality built into the phone and sharing the CDMA antenna so we can't do simultaneouly voice and data and the SIM is only for International roaming on GSM networks.
Can you provide a detailed answer to this?
If you're interested, the Tech Specs from the iPhone 5. For the Cellular and Wireless section, the carriers are not listed but are ordered AT&T for the first GSM model, Sprint and Verizon for the CDMA version, and the International only model for the last GSM.

I got a Sprint iPhone 5 on contract and then called sprint and told them that I needed to get the phone unlocked cuz i was going to travel to Mexico City. i did this with my iPhone 4s and I never had a problem with it overseas. Sprint NEVER said they can’t unlock it, in fact the international department was very nice and said "yes, just restore it and you should be fine" i did that and i got a message on iTunes that said that the iPhone was unlocked.
When i called to do the same with the iPhone 5 i got the same response but this time when i did the restore, the iPhone is unlocked message did not come up. i called sprint again and they said that they were having problems unlocking the iPhone 5s and that they send the request to apple but never get a confirmation that the device is unlocked on their end like they did with the 4s.
They told me they would contact me later and eventually a manager emailed me and asked that I do the process again. I had the same result and just left for my trip, when I got to Mexico City I put in the sim card and the phone started working no problem, so i thought that the phone had been unlocked successfully. Unfortunately I have the same problem that you all do and I can’t send sms to anyone.
From what I can tell this IS an apple problem as sprint is more than happy to unlock the iPhone for anyone that just calls them. i think the problem is that apple did not lock the phone from the factory or did it but not completely, and now is not offering a solution to the problem. The sprint manager told me himself that they have no problem unlocking the phone but that the system they have in place to do it is not working with the iPhone 5s...."
A Sprint Client
Well it seems that this problem concerns all Sprint iPhone 5 users, Sprint clients include will not be able to send sms outside usa on gsm network even after they have unlocked their phone , here is a Sprint client report here https://discussions.apple.com/message/19937980#199
... SPRINT , PLEASE, YOU NEED TO ACTION NOW WITH APPLE !
I agree, even that schiller's mail about scratching black iphones 5, and many many bugs in ios6 - i think that wouldn't happen with Steve's supervision... Apple is going down with quality and customer service, thinking just for $$$.
Hi MihaKolar, just to let you know we are hundreds and hundreds having the issue ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/19935972#199
but your using a local sim card not sprint service right? so buying the phone full price allowed it to be unlocked for internatinoal use? the apple store told me it would be locked to sprint still if i paid full price...
